Good parenting requires a well-equipped toolbox of knowledge and experience.
Unfortunately, sometimes we have to obtain this knowledge and experience after
the fact. In other words, we aren't always equipped to make the best decisions
as parents just because we are parents. With dedication, however, this
shortcoming can be addressed.
Being a parent can be related to a full time job. But, if you can take the time
to take care of yourself for a little while each day, you will be a more
attentive, less stressed, and less flustered when dealing with your children
which will generate a stronger bond with your child.
To get your child to take his or her foul-tasting medicine, try mixing it with a
little chocolate syrup. You can also refrigerate the medicine to make the taste
a little duller. Most medicines can be refrigerated, just make sure the bottle
does not say not to refrigerate before placing in the fridge.
One of the most important things to understand when it comes to parenting, is
that your child will misbehave, act up, throw tantrums and have meltdowns
occasionally. But, you need to set an example of what happens if they misbehave
and follow through with your intentions should they become out of control.
If your children are acting up and misbehaving, it is possible that they are
uninterested in
toddler toys and bored in nature. This means that you, as the
parent, need to stimulate their minds and bodies by providing new activities
that can be indoors or outdoors. Coming up with new projects for your children
will increase their overall creativity as well.
If your preschooler resists going to bed, try working with them to develop an
evening ritual. Once you've worked it out together, make a chart or picture
illustrating what happens. Each night, you can use this as a guide to help your
child fall asleep. If they try to demand something else, use the picture as a
tool.
While television definitely can be a helpful tool in several different ways,
make sure that you do not rely on it as your only way to keep kids occupied
around the house. Encourage other activities such as playing or listening to
music, reading, working on art projects, or engaging in role playing activities
like playing dress-up or cooking, and help your child's mind grow.
While homework time can be a major source of friction at home, it can also be a
gateway to a more positive relationship between you and your children. Instead
of just telling the kids to go work on their assignments, take a moment to sit
and go over your child's work or even just ask about what they are working on.
These small efforts help show your kids that you value their efforts and care
for their academic progress.
Learning to be a good parent can occur in a number of formats. The best way to
learn, of course, is through example. The tips you have reviewed above reflect
the experience of those that have already been down the path of parenting. You
now have the opportunity to benefit from their knowledge.
